A field key to the British Red Seaweeds

The larger seaweeds (marine ALGAE) are classified into four major groups according to the pigments (coloured compounds) they contain, and by other chemical and structural features. Usually a seaweed can be placed in one of these major groups by its colour when fresh, although in some species the typical colour of its group may be masked by other pigments.
