What is Natural History Live?

Experience a natural history lecture from an expert in their field, in the comfort of your own home.

Natural History Live is a series of regular online natural history talks exploring a range of subjects, including species identification, wildlife monitoring, conservation and ecology - usually with a focus on invertebrates. They're typically 1 hour long and are hosted on Zoom,  a free video conferencing platform. You don't need a webcam or microphone to attend so you also can turn these off if you prefer.

The basic format for most sessions is as follows:

  • 5 minute intro from the FSC
  • 30-40 minute talk from FSC staff or a guest speaker 
  • 10-25 minute question and answer (Q&A) session

The History of Natural History Live

In Spring 2020, in response to the COVID-19 lockdown and all of our events being cancelled, we started hosting free online natural history talks called "Virtual Meet Ups".

These proved to be really popular and we had lots of requests to continue running these post-lockdown, so here we are! We've changed the name and the format slightly so they are now known as Natural History Live.

Do you want to be a guest speaker? 

Natural History Live is a great way to engage with the biological recording and natural history communities, bringing together amateur naturalists and volunteer biological recorders with experts and sector professionals. We deal with all the admin, technology and hosting so you can focus on your presentations and answering any questions in the Q&A. The format of the webinars can be found above, your presentation can be 30-40mins long and the duration of the Q&A session will vary depending on how long your presentation is. 

The Natural History Live series is managed by the FSC BioLinks project team. The FSC BioLinks project focuses on training people to identify and record British invertebrates, so applications relating to these topics will be prioritised. However, our audience is interested in a wide range of taxa and topics relating to British wildlife so please feel free to submit an application even if your talk does not focus on invertebrates.
